3/2/2024 0 Comments Myst![]() A world of pastel pre-rendered edifices, the sea gently not lapping against the dock, and a box poking out the ground with a lever on it. Then you click on that picture and are "transported" to that world. ![]() MYST, to correctly shout its name, begins with a man mumbling something about a book. Mostly because of my declining faculties, but also desperate survival. The Macciest of all Mac games, a shiny veneer plastered across empty nothingness.Īnd I suppose if I were held hostage in a dank prison cell for ten years, and allowed only seven songs to listen to, I'd eventually convince myself they were the best songs. ("And why should I need an eject button when I can drag this icon laboriously across the desktop and drop it on this other icon instead? Or more usually unfold a paperclip and frantically wedge it into this tiny hole on the front of the machine conveniently located where your PC wastes space with a button.") And they'd delude themselves and all those around them that the scant few games they could play were all absolute stone-cold classics. "Well actually it's MUCH better for graphic design work," they'd say, having never done any graphic design work, nor ever intending to. They'd been sold such a lemon, and such an expensive lemon, that there was nothing for it but to double-down and pretend it was by far the superior choice. They'd spent a vast amount of money on a machine that had about seven games available for it total, no right mouse button, and no eject button on the floppy drive. Myst was, of course, a game championed by the worst people who existed in the 1990s: Mac owners. (For clarity, I'm playing the supremely arrogantly named "Masterpiece Edition", rather than "RealMyst", because this is about being right about the game that came out in 1993, not one of the sad attempts to fix it in the meantime.) Who will I even be? Am I a man entirely built on a foundation of hating one game? Nrrrgghhhhh - I'm pressing Play. what if it's fine? I'm inviting a potential existential crisis that could unravel me like an old jumper. I've just installed Myst onto my PC, on purpose. What if I'm wrong about Myst? What if my deep-set loathing of this screensaver with levers is based on the opinions of a less advanced earlier iteration of myself? To see this content please enable targeting cookies. But, today I confront myself with an uncomfortable reality: I've not played it in a very long time. Seriously, I'm talking for 21 years professionally, and six years before that as a hobbyist hater of terrible games. ![]() I have been rude about Myst for longer than many readers will have been alive. Past Perfect is a retrospective column in which we look back into gaming history to see whether old favourites are still worth playing today.

I've long admired Nina Simone's outspoken political beliefs. "My manner is tough / I'll kill the first mother I see / My life has been rough / I'm awfully bitter these days / Because my parents were slaves / What do they call me?" And with a bittersweet sense of humor and determination that encapsulates black female life, Simone screams the answer, "My name is Peaches!" The last of the four women is the toughest of them all. Without overstatement, we can picture and understand how each woman has struggled with her sense of beauty in a culture whose standard is defined by blonde hair and blue eyes. Simone skillfully introduces us to four black women of differing skin tones and experiences. Take the song "Four Women," an original Simone composition presented with a simple, hypnotic arrangement. Through her life and music she epitomized the essence of the black American - and especially the black female - experience. Nina Simone was much more than a "smoky-toned jazz and blues singer," as many writers have characterized her. ![]() The best way to capture the cultural legacy of someone like Simone is to listen to her music. Nina Simone's voice has been a comforting and familiar presence in my life for as long as I can remember, and since hearing the news of her death on April 21, I've been listening to her songs almost exclusively and with sad but fresh ears. 3/2/2024 0 Comments Example of tag gamesESPN “Monday Night Football” reporter Lisa Salters posted on social media Thursday night that she was “shocked, disappointed and disgusted. 3/2/2024 0 Comments Nitrile gloves vs vinyl gloves![]() These gloves are most often used for light-duty tasks. ![]() High-numbered gloves provide greater durability, but lower flexibility than low-numbered gloves. Low-numbered gloves provide greater dexterity, flexibility and sense of touch than high-numbered gloves. While the current glove standard is 3 mil thick and premium ones are 5 mil or more, but they will need to be measured at the wrist, fingertips, and palm. The Best Thickness for Disposable Glovesĭisposable gloves generally range from 4-15 mils thick. So if you are in another country shopping for disposable nitrile gloves, the number of microns indicated is its level of thickness. However, other countries use Micro Meters (Microns), a unit of length equal to one-millionth of a metre. Contrary to popular belief, a mil is not the same as a millimeter-it's a unit of thickness equal to one-thousandth (.001) of an inch. In America, glove thickness is usually expressed in mils, or thousandths of an inch. Thick and thin gloves each have their own pros and cons, but at the end of the day, it is a matter of appropriateness to the task you are about to take. The important takeaway is that there are multiple options to consider don’t let the rumor of disposable nitrile gloves being inherently thick, deter you from using these versatile gloves for everything from working in your garden to keeping safe as you clean up after an oil spill. But if you are looking for an economical option that will perform very specific tasks without sacrificing tactile sensitivity, thin latex or nitrile gloves may be right for you. If a strong, puncture-resistant glove is the top priority, then a heavy-duty version might be necessary. ![]() For a nitrile glove that pairs a balance between comfort and protection, people may want to opt for a midweight option. 3/2/2024 0 Comments Netflix carbon altered![]() Whether Altered Carbon season 3 will ever happen remains unclear, but there is a good chance that if it does, it will not happen with Netflix. Indeed, Schapker's comments suggest there may have been official discussions about the future of Altered Carbon already. It is entirely possible that this played a part in the decision to end the show prematurely, but there are a lot of examples of canceled shows being resurrected again. Netflix has canceled plenty of shows as it scrambled to compete with the emerging competition from other streaming services, and the budget for Altered Carbon, which star Joel Kinnaman described as being "bigger than the first three seasons of Game of Thrones," keeps it among Netflix's most expensive productions. Quellcrist Falconer was off to foment a revolution! We had a great season 3 written, and I’m sorry we were not able to bring it to people. I still harbor a dream that someday, somebody will come knocking and want to continue that story. She stirs hope that Altered Carbon season 3 might happen after all by committing to never giving up the fight for its revival. The premiere kicks the story off reasonably well, but also drags its heels when it comes time to get Kovacs to agree to the murder investigation that will drive the rest of the season. In a recent interview with Inverse, Schapker addresses her time working on Altered Carbon, describing her "heartbreak" at the show being canceled. "The first five episodes of Altered Carbon are a bit of a slog. ![]() "The final three episodes of the season are pitch-perfect noir/sci-fi, with Kovacs and his crew embarking on what amounts to a daring heist in hopes of bringing down a massive criminal empire, while Ortega faces down her literal demons. "The world of Altered Carbon is so much fun to fall into - especially when it starts toying around with ideas of what makes a human being - that it carried me past some of the show’s weaker moments." "The final three episodes of the season are pitch-perfect noir/sci-fi"- Todd VanDerWerff, Vox Todd VanDerWerff of Vox is more positive, declaring that Altered Carbon's initial 10-episode offering "is the best first season of a Netflix drama since The Crown debuted in 2016." He does, however, admit that the show suffers from a slow pace in its early episodes. "Altered Carbon tries to meld a dystopian class-warfare story and a hard-boiled detective story by simply piling on both the pseudo-philosophical blather and the film-noir clichés." Vox "But if you’re concerned with maintaining your reputation as a leading purveyor of prestige TV, you might want to think harder about what you slap the 'Netflix Original' label on." "Dichen Lachman, as fellow rebel soldier, has a better feel for the material and shines in the frequent and graphically bloody action scenes." If it were on the Syfy channel, where it belongs, it would look above average." "Altered Carbon is a lesson in the importance of context.
